Army Basing Guide
Find the right foundation for your next army, warband, diorama or display miniature.
Good basing gives a collection a shared setting. Start with the correct base size for your model, choose a theme, then add a few details to tell the story.
1. Check the base size
Common miniature base diameters include 25mm, 28mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm and 100mm. The correct size depends on your exact miniature or kit, so check the manufacturer's instructions and current game rules before ordering.
- Check your modelConfirm the required base dimensions and whether it needs a round, oval or other shape.
- Choose the foundationUse a scenic resin base for instant detail or a plain plastic base for your own design.
- Add characterScatter printed rocks, vegetation, ruins, mushrooms or bones to tie your miniatures together.
Important: These are inspiration ideas, not official base-size recommendations for any particular faction. Always check individual model requirements, especially for tournament play.
2. Choose your setting
3. Scale up your theme
For a skirmish band, choose a few complementary resin details and repeat your paint palette across each base. For a larger army, start with matching scenic bases and use printed details sparingly for variety. For dioramas, introduce different heights with cork, rocks, trees and a clear focal point.
Ideas for miniature painters
Grimdark sci-fi
Pair industrial or alien bases with printed stone, rubble, bones and crystal effects. A shared colour palette works brilliantly across infantry and centrepieces.
Fantasy and skirmish gaming
Mix mushrooms, ferns and roots with stone bases or woodland textures to create a consistent atmosphere without making every model identical.
Display pieces and dioramas
Build layers of height using cork, larger resin rocks and tree trunks, then fill the gaps with tiny plants, grass and fungal growth.
